One of the traditions of Studio A is is to seek out and acquire fascinating artifacts with a story to tell. Here, we offer a spinning wheel or 'charkha'. This particular form was both a tool and a powerful symbol, as Mahatma Gandhi hoped that widespread use of the charkha would assist the peoples of India to achieve self-sufficiency and independence from the British. It was even included on early versions of the Indian national flag. The availability of these vintage charkhas is very limited.
