Wall Sconces

Design Tips:

  • Wall sconces are typically mounted about 5-1/2 ~ 6 feet high from the floor for 8 ~ 9 foot ceilings. Some people choose to place wall sconces a little higher at 5' 9" with a 9' ceiling.
  • Wall sconces are aesthetic light fixtures that are ideal for rooms where space is scarce.
In short, wall sconces are space saving light fixtures that are mounted on the wall. These fixtures are out of the way and can illuminate a larger area of space using the wall to bounce indirect light off of. Sconces can be ornate brass intricacies, candle featured structures, or bowl shaped glass shades among many other styles. They can also offer an attractive touch of design to any room.

Wall sconces have gone by many names over the years including wall candles, wall candle sconces, wall lights and so forth. These light sources started out as flames from fire before eventually becoming the electric versions we know and love today.
The very first wall sconces are thought to have been wooden torches that featured a rag wrapped around one end. The rag was often soaked in something flammable, such as oil or animal fat.
When it was lit, it would produce not only a very bright light, but also a small amount of heat, which was ideal at the time—especially during a cold winter’s night. Plus, they could be used both indoors and outdoors, which added to their versatility. Unfortunately, these early variations of the wall sconce proved to be quite dangerous, as they could quite easily catch fire, spread fire and cause death and destruction.
Eventually, people discovered that they could create candles made from beeswax (or other materials,) which removed large, uncontrolled flames from the home and made them safer yet still allowed them to remain functional. Over the years, candles were transformed into gas light fixtures and eventually, the wall sconce became electric.
Though the earliest versions tended to be the least decorative, as wall sconce technology advanced, people focused more on appearance and decor. This lead to the creation of wall candles and wall sconces that featured decorative tile or the incorporation of precious metals into the designs.
Today, not only are wall sconces safer and just as functional, but they also come in a wide array of choices to suit just about every taste. So no matter if you’re looking for a modern wall sconce or a traditional one, you’ll find the perfect sconce for your home.
Wall sconces have always been about function, but modern versions are also about visual aesthetics and complimenting the decor of a room. Not only does this particular wall sconce add to the decor of the room, it also adds general ambient lighting and can quickly and easily double as a reading light next to a comfortable arm chair.

New Customer Review

Looks Super

This light worked perfect. We had a mounting box on the wall that was off center... this fixture allowed us to center the light over the sink. It looks fantastic and custom. Great piece at a good price.

Creating a Beautiful, Well-Lit FireplaceFeb 18, 2013

Because of its ability to create its own warm glow, the fireplace is one of the overlooked places in the home when it comes to lighting. To truly enhance the room, you can make small adjustments to your lighting scheme that can make a huge impact on the first impression of your home. You may consider retrimming existing recessed fixtures, which will transform your current fixtures into recessed adjustable low-voltage fixtu...(Read More)
