Recessed Lighting

Design Tips:

  • Recessed lighting can be used in drop ceilings as well as more traditional plaster ceilings.
  • Combined with pendant lights, recessed lights make practical task lighting in a kitchen.
  • Smaller recessed lights can be used to highlight wall art and paintings.
Recessed lighting is a popular lighting option for ceilings in residential and commercial, including homes, offices, hotels, stores, libraries and other interiors requiring overhead lighting. Recessed lights are set into the ceiling where the main body of the light, including the bulb is recessed into the ceiling. The recessed lighting trim is flush with the plane of the ceiling, creating a sleek ceiling light fixture. The majority of recessed ceiling lights are round, with trim that often is white to blend in with the typical white ceiling, but there are square recessed lighting trims. The size of the can can vary from the small three inch size recessed light to the larger eight inch size. The larger the size diameter, more light and a wider swath of light will be created. Higher ceilings and larger rooms or spaces might benefit more from larger recessed lights, while smaller spaces with lower ceilings can use the smaller recessed light sizes. Size is also a matter of personal preference and interior style.

Styles

Recessed lights and mini recessed lights come in a range of sizes with different trim options. Classic trims are available in smooth or ridged powder-coat painted metal. Silvery metal finishes in chrome or nickel are also popular choices as are black, copper as well as white. Trims also come in glass that includes frost and colored glass. Styles are similar because of the design and function of recessed lighting in the ceiling. Recessed lights get their style and look from size and trim because the majority of the light fixture is hidden from view inside the ceiling. Eyeball, aperture, gimbal, wall wash, domed and louvered trim styles serve different functions on recessed lights. There are recessed lights for new construction and remodeling projects to existing structures.

Applications

Recessed lighting has many applications throughout the home, office, hotel, restaurant and other professional settings. Recessed lights can be used in areas with low ceilings like finished basements or in combination with other lighting. Recessed lights make great task lighting in kitchens. These ceiling light fixtures can be used to spotlight art or create ambient light for home theaters. Combined with other ceiling fixtures as well as table lamps and floor lamps, recessed lighting provides a well balanced lighting profile in such rooms as kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms.

Pictured left is a group of W.A.C. Lighting Low Voltage Multi Spot Trims for recessed light fixtures. The square shape of the multi spot trims for recessed lights nicely complements the other strong lines and square shapes found in the room's design and architecture. The square arch, square windows and the square recessed lights are nicely referenced in other decorative elements and art throughout the space, creating a cohesive design in the interior. Using a grid formation of recessed lights on the ceiling makes each individual recessed light feel like a part of a larger ceiling light. Contemporary ceiling spot lights along with recessed lights can create sleek ceiling lighting profiles that are function as well as stylish additions to a room's design.

Q & A of the Day

  • We're going to purchase the NSR-408 from Nora Lighting. We want the D10 dimmable ballast, but I'm having trouble determining how to order this. Thanks for your help.

The NSR-408 can be installed utilizing a D10 dimmable ballast, but this is a customizable option. There is an upcharge for this option.
