Few people realize that when it comes to design and decor, lighting and color go hand-in-hand. The type of light bulb you choose can have a dramatic effect on the paint color you choose and unless you’re planning to install those same fluorescent ceiling fixtures in your home that you see over the paint chip display, then your color is going to look different on your walls. Here are a few tips and tricks for working with lighting and color in your home decor.
The Effect of Lights on Paint
One of the biggest factors many people fail to take into consideration when choosing a wall color is the effect of both the natural light from the windows and the light from their light fixtures. Always remember that the color you see in the store beneath those bright fluorescent lights will never be the same color you see in your home. This is true even if you happen to have fluorescent lights in your home. This is because the dynamics of the space will be entirely different. You’ll have different floors, different furnishings, different natural and artificial light.
Secondly, if you don’t have proper lighting, it will also effect how your space looks. Not enough light can cause a space to look dirty or dingy. Meanwhile, too much light can make a space look washed out or even dated. Therefore, it’s important to work to create a space with proper light. This often means a wide array of light fixtures in a home from wall sconces to table lamps to ceiling lights.
Finally, different light bulbs and light fixtures will produce different colors. You’ll notice when shopping for light bulbs today that they often will note if they create a warm color, a cool color or a neutral color. Cool colors can bring out cooler undertones in color, and vice versa with warm colors. However, mixing and matching the wrong light bulbs and light fixtures with the wrong colors can create a less-than-desirable look for any space, so keep this in mind.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match different light bulbs and different light fixtures in each room of your home until you create a desirable lighting effect. If you’re still unsure, certainly don’t be afraid to hire a lighting professional. Having proper lighting in your home is key to creating a comfortable space.
With paint colors, the type of paint you choose can also have an effect on the overall lighting in a room. For example, glossier paints will reflect a small amount more of the light from a light fixture than a flat paint will. However, this reflection is often minimal and may not even be necessary to take into consideration when looking at different paints.
It is always important to take light into consideration when decorating your home. This is especially true not only when choosing light fixtures for any given space, but for deciding how many lights and what type of light bulbs are necessary to properly light the space. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Kitchen lighting is a vital element to your design. Rustic, contemporary interiors are incredibly popular, and it’s no different when it comes to lighting. This re-purposed whisk light shade gives new life to an old kitchen item and makes a wonderful decoration.
Organic shapes inspired by nature are increasingly popular in home designs. This lovely pendant light is inspired by the bulbous shape of dandelions, and makes a striking focal point in this room.

Our team recently attended the Las Vegas Lightfair convention in May and found it to be extremely benefiting and innovative. The Lightfair International (LFI) is the world’s largest lighting trade show and conference representing architectural, design, engineering, and lighting work from all over the world.
One of the big features of the Lightfair this year was the focus on LED lighting. Check out some of the highlights of what we learned below!
As LED lighting begins to take the lead, LED retrofits are selling very well among homeowners and in the retail/commercial settings. LED retrofits are becoming the optimal choice and quickly replacing incandescent, halogen, and CFL. Often having an easy replacement process, the benefits of LED retrofits can easily be seen.
Benefits of LED retrofits:
- Pro-longed life therefore less maintenance
- Long-term money saving
- Maximized brightness & high quality
LED lighting is not only for your interior. It is quickly gaining popularity in outdoor light as well.
Various companies are implementing LED lighting and taking advantage of it’s benefits. The Orange County Irvine Company, a major land owner in Irvine, has converted to the use of above ground outdoor LED spotlights.
Why the Replacement?
They decided to replace their traditional HID (High Intensity Discharge) spotlights because HID spotlights require a ballast which is often bulky and is installed within the ground. In addition, over time, the ballast housing accumulates water, which translates into high maintenance . With the switch to an LED spotlight, there is no in-ground component and eliminates that issue.
For jewelry stores, one effective technique for the display lighting is to use 2100K LEDs for gold jewelries and use 5000K for white gold, platinum, silver. The reason for this is because helps to bring out the natural color of the metal. The 2100K is warmer color, therefore it brings out the natural yellow color in gold. 5000K is a cold, white light, so it brings out the best in white jewelry. With these LED differences, it is easy to find one that matches your product’s needs.
Innovation in LED
One of the big hits of the light show was the demonstration of the iPad to control LED lights in the Osram Traxon booth. With this feature, the ipad can change the LED light color, display pattern, and color temperature. Images 1 | 7

Light fixtures go through trends much slower than other areas of home decor, so it’s okay to follow a few trends every once in a while. In 2012, there are a number of different trends that have come and are likely here to stay for several more years. In fact, some trends have become downright classic in their appeal.
Light fixtures that feature drum shades have come into trend in the recent years and will likely continue to be trendy into 2012. This particular style has become classic in its appeal, with its clean lines and overall sleek design, the drum shade is here to stay.
Today you can easily find combination crystal chandeliers with drum shade covers, table lamps, floor lamps, miniature pendant lights and so forth. Plus, drum shades are inexpensive and can easily be added to existing lamps to update their look.
In recent years, chandeliers have become an exceptionally trendy light fixture and 2012 will be no exception. Plus, recent interior design trends have included chandeliers in a number of unexpected places outside of the dining room. Today, you can use chandeliers or their smaller versions, chandelettes, in nearly any room including the bedroom, bathroom and even the closet.
Mix and Match
Another popular lighting trend is the mixing and matching of different light fixtures in different decor schemes. For example, using industrial style pendant lights in a contemporary styled kitchen. By combining two unique styles, you create a look that is unexpected but still works.
Adding color to a space through light fixtures is going to be extremely trendy, especially when used in an unexpected way. For example, highlighting a vase in a foyer using blue lighting; or green under cabinet lights in an neutral colored kitchen. It’s an unexpected twist that when used sparingly, can really make a statement in a room.
Speaking of statements; in 2012, look for light fixtures that make a statement in the room. Traditionally, only the wealthy were able to afford extravagant light fixtures, such as chandeliers, that called attention to themselves. Today, thanks to advances in technology and manufacturing, every family can afford to purchase light fixtures that create a statement.
The great thing about this particular trend is that there are no specific fixtures that are trendy, but rather any piece that stands out in your specific room can be a statement piece all on its own. This makes it one of the most accessible lighting trends of 2012.

Whether you are getting new lights for your bathroom remodeling project or you’re adding them to your new foyer, lighting fixtures don’t have to be energy hogs to work well. In fact, by using one or all of these eco-friendly light sources, you can help decrease your eco-footprint as well as decrease your electric bill. But no matter what lighting source you decide to buy, it’s in your best interest to hire a professional electrician to install them. With the addition of a dimmer switch, these light sources can become even more eco-friendly by allowing you to control the exact amount of light you need, exactly when you need it most.

Take the LED
One of the best ways to efficiently light any room in the house is through the use of LED’s. Light emitting diodes or LED’s use a small electric charge to efficiently create a small source of light. When these small sources are packed together tightly, they produce as much energy as a conventional light bulb but for a fraction of electricity. For instance a 60 watt incandescent light bulb is just as bright as a four watt LED system. Not only do the lights work more energy efficiently, they also create far less heat. This means the overall ambient air temperature of your house will go down, allowing your HVAC system to work at maximum efficiency.

LED Light Sources: LED under cabinet lighting works best in the kitchen and bathroom areas. LED strip lights work well above cabinets, in alcoves and on porches.
Win the Pendant
Pendant lighting is a great source for task lighting above counter spaces, over furniture and even outdoors. Stylish design and practical use make this lighting fixture a must have in just about any room in the house. With the addition of a CFL or LED bulb, energy efficiency increases exponentially.
Pendant Lighting Sources: The shade or cover of the pendant lamp can be green too. Look for a recycled paper, bamboo or other natural material for the ultimate in eco-friendly lighting.

I’m Your Biggest Fan
A fan is more than just a great way to keep cool. It also helps give your HVAC a break when it’s working overtime on a hot day or cold night. Fans help circulate the air and help keep ambient air temperatures consistent. A ceiling fans light kit adds to the energy efficiency of the unit by allowing you to add an ambient light source using CFL or LED bulbs. Once a dimmer switch has been added to the fan and light kit, it works pulling double duty as an ecofriendly light and ventilation system.
