Accessorizing a Dining Room

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

The dining room can be as troublesome as a fireplace mantel. It seems like it should be easy to decorate, but the right home accessories always seem to elude you. Accessorizing a dining room involves blending both home accessories and decor to create a look that represents you, your family and perhaps even the rest of your home. With so much pressure in a single room, it can become stressful creating a home decor look that’s the envy of all your guests.

Furniture

Dining Room Furniture

Always start with furnitures when decorating a dining room space. The type of dining table and chairs you choose will help to set the tone for the rest of the room. If you have the space, you may want to consider additional storage in the form of bookshelves, a console table or a buffet.

Buffet Table

When choosing additional furnitures, such as the console table or buffet table, you don’t necessarily have to match the dining table and chairs. You can easily mix and match styles to create a look that is effortlessly chic. Mixing a contemporary dining set with a mid-century modern buffet table is a perfect example. On a side note, when mixing different types of wood furnitures together, try to match woods or feature start contrasts between the wood such as light red walnut and dark ebony woods.

Overall when choosing different furnitures for a single room such as the dining room, take scale, shape and texture into consideration over color or style; as this will help blend the pieces together in your space, creaming seamless home decor in your dining room that looks effortless.

Color Palette

White Dining Room

With your dining room furnitures chosen, it’s time to decide on a color palette for your dining room. Since most dining room furnitures are neutral in color (wood tones or white) it is relatively easy to blend almost any color into the color palette for this space.

Great dining room colors could include warm hues such as red, orange or yellow and cooler hues such as blue or green. You can also opt for more neutral or natural shades such as beige, chocolate brown, moss green or ivory.

Home Accessories

Wall Art

Using your color palette and your chosen furnitures, you can now begin finding the right accessories for your dining room. Sometimes it helps to start from the top and work your way down to the little details, starting with wall art.

Just because it’s a dining room does not mean your wall decor needs to be food-themed. You can use any style of wall art in your room, just be sure to find artwork that blends into your chosen color scheme. The goal is to create a seamless, cohesive look. Even if your wall art only uses one teeny, tiny spot of your color palette, that will still make a difference in tying it all together.

Table Decor

Next, table decor can be seasonal or it can be year round, or it can even be updated on a whim whenever you please. Table decor should be low-key in terms of height, as you don’t want it to block your view of across the table. This makes conversation difficult. Instead, choose smaller (height-wise) displays or choose table decor that can be temporarily relocated when needed.

If you’ve opted for a buffet table, use this space to store your extra supplies: napkins, placements, napkin rings and so forth. A console table can be used for storing table decor temporarily, but if you’re looking for home accessories, keep in mind that the console table is a perfect place to display taller accessories. Lastly, finish up the room with a floor rug if desired and viola! Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Dining Room Table Decor

Thursday, December 29th, 2011
For many people, the idea of finding the perfect table decor for their dining table is an elusive dream. They struggle to find the right piece that matches their style of home decor while still balancing out the size or shape of the table. Home accessories and decor are plentiful in stores, but finding the right ones can be tricky. For the dining table, there are thousands, if not millions, of home accessories that are an option but not all fit the style of the room or the shape of the table.

Charger Plates
Decorative Charger Plates

Small dining rooms (and thus, dining tables) often don’t have room for any extra table decor. However, a few charger plates can easily stand all on their own. Charger plates come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, so it’s impossible not to find the right set for your dining room style. There are organic shapes, kidney bean shapes, squares, circles and variety galore. Plus, they come in a variety of materials: metal, woven grasses, plastics and more, so you can find them to suit your space easily.

Seasonal Displays

Holiday Dining Decor

Another easy option for table decor is the use of seasonal displays. Seasonal displays don’t have to state obvious holidays, either. Ideas could include large apothecary jars filled with pinecones or faux autumn leaves, holiday ornaments in large bowls or modern square planters with neatly trimmed grass.

Cohesive Randomness

Unique Table Decor

Another unique idea for table decor is the blending of a number of small to large sized items to create a table display. A can of spray paint can bring all of the items together in color and the different items themselves create a unique look. You could use different vases, large chess pieces, small statues of people, animals, floral displays and so forth. By painting them a single color, you unify their look while still keeping their originality in-tact. Table decorations can be random but still tasteful if done right!

Bird Cage

Bird Cage Table Top Decor

If you’re decorating your home in shabby chic or even in traditional, a small, quaint little bird cage may be the answer. Look for cages from antique stores rather than new ones from the pet store, as these may not be as decorative. You can also easily find decorative bird cages in several home decor stores, so keep an eye out for them if you choose to go this route.

Zen Garden

Modern Zen Dining

For oriental-influenced dining rooms, a zen garden would be perfectly at home as table decor. You can even make your own zen garden in any shape or size you desire, making it easy to customize it to your specific dining room table size and shape. You can include sand, small pebbles and even moss to create unique gardens for your dining table decor.

Apothecary Jars

Apothecary Jar Decor

Either clear, colored or filled with different items, apothecary jars are becoming extremely trendy in the design world. You can find them at a number of home decor retailers in a variety of styles and sizes. Plus, these jars easily mingle with a number of styles from traditional to Victorian, contemporary to eclectic.

These are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling on home accessories for the dining table. Remember, no accessory is off limits as long as it fits your space! Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Tips for Using Multiple Patterns in a Single Room

Monday, December 12th, 2011

When it comes to home accessories and decor, there are a lot of items out there and thus, a lot of different patterns, colors and textures. In fact, it’s not unusual for a person to fall in love with two or more home accessories with different patterns or color schemes. That being said, home decor still needs to flow properly, even if multiple patterns are used. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to use multiple patterns in a single room.

Select a Scale

Home Decor

When you use multiple patterns on home decor, an easy way to blend these patterns together is by selecting patterns that feature the same scale. For example, if you have chosen a large pattern, you’ll want to choose other patterns that are also equally large in scale.

This can apply to curtains, furniture upholstery, throw pillows, rugs and so forth.

Add Solid Colors

Home Decor

Though you may love your patterns, it’s important to add a few pieces into the room that feature solid colors.

Solid colors can help break up the space visually, letting each pattern stand on its own rather than forcing the competing patterns to rely on one another.

Size on Size

Home Decor

Outside of choosing multiple patterns that are equal in size, another option that many interior designers use is the size on size concept. For example, if you choose a medium sized pattern, you should use it on a medium sized home accessory such as an ottoman or a throw blanket. On the other hand, with a small scale pattern, you’ll want that to be seen on a smaller item such as a throw pillow or a small piece of wall art.

Similar Styles or Color Schemes

Home Accessories and Decor

Finally, another option also used by professionals is the use of patterns that feature similar color schemes or similar styles. This particular path may be more time consuming and may not be as easy to achieve, as it does take a professional eye to spot patterns that will mesh well; especially when you’re not focusing specifically on the pattern size.

Think Outside the Fabric

Home Decor

Patterns aren’t just found on different fabrics for upholstered furniture, drapery and other home accessories. It can also be found on a number of different items including wooden furniture facades, charger plates, frames for wall art, the wall art itself, and so forth.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix and Match

Home Accessories

The most important thing to remember when choosing different patterns is to not over-think things and allow yourself to mix and match different patterns. Home decor doesn’t have to be perfect, life isn’t a magazine! If you love two different fabrics but you think they don’t match, you may be surprised to find that chances are they really do and you’re simply over-thinking things. Most people are drawn to similar items, and that also applies to patterns in home accessories, so keep this in mind when you’re mixing and matching different patterns. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Finding Home Accessories for Contemporary Decor

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Few people are ready or able to hire a professional interior designer to pick out all the perfect home accessories and home decor for their space. This leaves people to pick out their own home accessories and decor, which can quickly become a daunting task if they’re not sure what to look for. Sure, they might know what style they’d like to use, such as contemporary, but that doesn’t mean they know which home accessories fit a particular style and which ones don’t.

Choosing Contemporary Home Accessories and Decor

If you’re unfamiliar with the differences between modern home decor and contemporary home decor, it can be difficult to make the right choices in terms of accessories. Fortunately, the vast majority of mainstream ‘modern’ or ‘contemporary’ decor can be interchanged in a home. However, if you’re concerned about keeping the two separate, remember that ‘contemporary’ refers to pieces that are the latest and greatest in interior design and home decor trends. Meanwhile, modern pieces can often be reminiscent of mid-century modern decor. So, whenever you’re looking at home accessories and decor, ask yourself if you can envision the piece in your home or in a home from the 1950s.

A Contemporary Living Room

Next, once you’ve figured out what the differences are between modern and contemporary home accessories, you can start picking things out. The great thing about this particular style is that you can use it to add a bit of flash and glamour to your home decor.

Let’s start by looking at table decor. A great way to top a dining room is through beautiful charger plates. For charger plates, you may want to consider some flashy, trendy pieces. For example, this year is all about thick, chunky weaves. Look for charger plates that are made from thick woven grasses. Another popular trend in contemporary decor is the use of hammered metals. Fortunately, it’s easy to find woven grass charger plates or hammered metal charger plates.

Metal Charger Plates

On the other hand, you could choose to tone down your charger plates and opt for flashy centerpieces instead such as a hammered metal vase or a mirrored vase. Look for items that add a lot of texture to the space, such as a ribbed vase or the hammered variety, which creates visual interest. Since contemporary color palettes are toned down and relatively subdued, it’s not uncommon for people to look for ways to bring a little bit of color into the space through the various home accessories. So, don’t be afraid to throw in a brightly colored piece of table decor such as a teal vase.

Teal Vases Accents

Another popular choice for contemporary home decor is the use of blown glass, whether it be a blown glass light fixture or a blown glass vase. Other materials that work well in contemporary home decor include concrete, various metals in various forms (hammered, polished,) matte ceramics or porcelains, glass and chunky woven fabrics and grasses.

Decorating Tips for Foyers and Entryways

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Of all the rooms in your home, a foyer or entryway is typically among the most difficult to decorate. You find yourself stumped when looking at home accessories and decor. You’re not sure what home accessories are appropriate to use, where or how to use them in a foyer. However, it’s important to have a well decorated foyer, as it is the entryway to your home and it sets the tone for the rest of your home decor.

Rug

Since the entryway is exactly that: an entryway, it’s important to have a rug. Give your guests a place to wipe their feet and place their shoes before entering your home. However, stay away from lighter colors and prints. Opt for patterns or colors that will hide dirt well.

Also, be sure to choose something that can be easily washed on a regular basis, as you’ll need to do this. It is an entryway, after all. Don’t forget to place a rug pad underneath to help hold the rug in place. After all, you don’t want your guests to slip!

Bench

Foyer Bench

A Creative Beginning via

A bench is a great option for decorating a foyer. It gives your guests a place to sit when they put on or take off their shoes. Depending on the style, you can find a bench to match your home decor. Benches come in contemporary styles, modern styles, Moroccan styles, mid century modern styles, and many, many more.

Mirror

A mirror is almost an essential for an entryway. Mirrors help to create a welcoming, bright space. Choose an oval mirror for a chic space or a large, rectangular mirror for a modern or traditional space.

Wall Art

If you’ve got a beloved piece of wall decor, such as an antique painting or a sculpture, the foyer is a great place to put it. By placing these items in this area of your home, you guarantee that they’ll get seen often by you and your guests. This is a great option, especially if the wall decor you’ve chosen makes you happy or is inspiring.

Home Accessories for Foyers

Fresh flowers, potpourri and candles are all a great choice for entryway home accessories. Not only are these items visually appealing, but they can help freshen up the room. Nothing is worse than coming home to a house that smells! It can also be extremely embarrassing for guests to enter a home that has a funky odor and this is especially true if you have pets.

Choose your floral arrangements based on your space rather than just on color. For example, if you have a foyer with tall ceilings or one that is open to the upstairs area, then use tall flowers like orchids or gladiolas. If you have a smaller foyer, use smaller flowers such as potted pansies or mums.

Lastly, look at the foyer as an opportunity to display your family and their interests or personalities. You could include home accessories such as family portraits or perhaps some wall art that is made by your children or grandchildren.

Table Decor Ideas

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

When it comes to home accessories and decor, there are many options to choose from. This is especially true when it comes to table decor. When choosing home decor, it can be hard to find unique table displays that vary away from the expected vase or candle arrangement. Fortunately, there are a number of home accessories that look just as good on a table and can even be reused elsewhere in your home when it is time to freshen your table decor.

Seasonal Displays

One of the easiest and quickest ways to create an ever-changing and always interesting display is to follow the seasons. For example, a bowl of lemons in the summer, pumpkin displays during fall and Halloween, small Christmas trees in December and so forth. If you’re the creative type, consider making your own displays so as to stray away from the more mainstream table decor. Ideas could include one of Christopher Columbus’ ships as a Thanksgiving table display or having your children create their own Frosty the Snowman for a table display.

Living Plants

Using living plants can be a really modern approach to table decor. This is especially true if you choose to create a grass display. When using grass to create a modern table display, use pots that have clean, modern lines. Circular pots that are short in height or elongated rectangular pots that are white in color tend to be ideal for these types of table decorations. Be sure to keep the grass trimmed neatly. Water and fertilize as needed to ensure your grass stays fresh and green.

Fruit Displays

Fruit displays are another creative idea and can serve double duty as dessert for a dinner party. You can cut various types of fruit up into different shapes and sizes and create your own unique displays. For example, cut up a variety of fruits into equal sized cubes. Then, using toothpicks, attach the cubed fruit to a halved melon or just leave arranged on a plate. Be sure to have a small bowl or cup for your guests to place their used toothpicks afterward.

Candy Displays

If you’re hosting a child’s birthday party, a unique table decor idea would be to use large lollipops to create a ‘floral’ display. Fill a small bucket or a wide-mouthed vase with clean pebbles, such as those you might find in a craft store, or with wrapped hard candies. Then, insert and arrange the lollipops until the desired effect is achieved. At the end of the party, let each of your child’s guests take home a lollipop. This is a great money-saving alternative to gift bags.

Origami

Another unique idea is to use origami creations as table decor. There are a number of books available online that can help teach you to create different origami figures. If you’re unable to or do not have the time to create your own origami, there are also several online resources that sell ready made or even porcelain origami replicas.

These are just a few ideas that will hopefully inspire you. When it comes to table decorations, the possibilities are endless!

Create A Tasteful Bathroom with Basic Bathroom Décor

Friday, July 8th, 2011

A bathroom without house décor is like a bathroom without water—it’s not going to go well. That’s why it’s important to come up with a good design plan before you begin any home improvement projects. Spice up your bathroom design with these basics of bathroom décor and you’ll be sure to get a great design that you’ll love for years to come.

Making a Plan

Display

Your décor isn’t going to show off itself. You’ll need to create a unique and eye catching display to showcase your décor in the bathroom. While items like wall art easily displays itself, table decorations need a good out of the way place to rest. Small benches, stools and ottomans with a flat wood or stone surface are the perfect out of the way space in the bathroom for your table top décor.

Bathroom Design

Claremont, Contemporary Bathroom Design by Anne Miller Design (via)

Displaying Décor Tip: Décor doesn’t have to lay flat on a tabletop surface to be displayed. Vanities, alcoves, cubbies and shelving all work in unison to display traditional task items like soap and towels as well as fashionable items like your favorite candle or flower vase on eye catching horizontal surfaces.

Mirrors

A mirror in the bathroom is not only a functional and necessary bathroom accessory; it can also be a fashionable one too. You don’t have to settle for the basic and bland rectangular mirror. Small oval mirrors set against a bare wall can make a huge transformation in your bathroom décor design. Mirrors help expand the room’s width and carry a reflection that plays perfect with natural and artificial lighting.

Bathroom Design

Claremont, Modern Bathroom Design by Anne Miller Design (via)

Mirror Décor Tip: Mirrors can work great in any design. But they don’t always have to be attached to the wall. Mirrors work well as a charger plate, makeup tray or soap display for the perfect horizontal mirror display.

Vanity Décor

The vanity is one of the best places to store and display décor. Home accessories like dried flowers, potpourri satchels, and glass figurines are all great vanity décor items for any bathroom display. Modernist décor makes use of toothbrush holders, soap dispensers and jewelry dishes to create a functioning and fashionable high-tech display.

Bathroom Design

Vanity Décor Tip: A vanity can be a really small place for décor and can easily be knocked about. It’s a good idea to choose décor that’s short and squat with a wide base to prevent spills and accidents that can break sensitive décor pieces easily.

5 Uses for a Glass Vase

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Sure, a vase can hold flowers or a candle in celebration of a budding romance but then what? Do you have to tuck the beauty in the back of the pantry until a year passes and February 14th rolls around again? Absolutely not! These home accessories just need an occasion to shine; here are some ways to use them year-round:

Create a Terrarium

Terrariums are easy to make and simple to maintain. All you need are your vase, small pebbles, potting soil and a small plant or two. Layer them so the pebbles are on the bottom (for drainage) and simply keep the soil moist.

Hold Fruit

Everyone can use a little fruit in their diet, and when it is sitting right in front of you in a glass vase on the counter, even better! Consider using lemons, limes, oranges… anything colorful. There are some fruit that won’t work as well as others because of their softer texture but if you eat them fast enough it won’t really matter anyway!

A Home for a Fish

Beta fish (also known as “Siamese Fighting Fish”) are amongst the favorite type of fish to adorn an office desk, a kitchen island or even a nightstand. Since they breathe air, and do not need a bubbler to oxygenate the water, they are inexpensive and are easy to care for. Betas come in a variety of colors; the most vibrant are usually male. One important thing: Never put two betas in the same vase. Yes, for obvious reasons.

Tidy Up and Get Organized

Glass vases, glasses, jars… They all can be used to help you get organized. Yes, home decor can be beautiful and functional! Do your buttons, paint brushes, pencils or cosmetic brushes need a decorative home? Consider using a glass vase to hold silverware or napkins at a buffet brunch or even using one to constrain your tongs for a fancy BBQ or your ladle for your punch bowl.
