Dining Room Table Decor

Thursday, December 29th, 2011
For many people, the idea of finding the perfect table decor for their dining table is an elusive dream. They struggle to find the right piece that matches their style of home decor while still balancing out the size or shape of the table. Home accessories and decor are plentiful in stores, but finding the right ones can be tricky. For the dining table, there are thousands, if not millions, of home accessories that are an option but not all fit the style of the room or the shape of the table.

Charger Plates
Decorative Charger Plates

Small dining rooms (and thus, dining tables) often don’t have room for any extra table decor. However, a few charger plates can easily stand all on their own. Charger plates come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, so it’s impossible not to find the right set for your dining room style. There are organic shapes, kidney bean shapes, squares, circles and variety galore. Plus, they come in a variety of materials: metal, woven grasses, plastics and more, so you can find them to suit your space easily.

Seasonal Displays

Holiday Dining Decor

Another easy option for table decor is the use of seasonal displays. Seasonal displays don’t have to state obvious holidays, either. Ideas could include large apothecary jars filled with pinecones or faux autumn leaves, holiday ornaments in large bowls or modern square planters with neatly trimmed grass.

Cohesive Randomness

Unique Table Decor

Another unique idea for table decor is the blending of a number of small to large sized items to create a table display. A can of spray paint can bring all of the items together in color and the different items themselves create a unique look. You could use different vases, large chess pieces, small statues of people, animals, floral displays and so forth. By painting them a single color, you unify their look while still keeping their originality in-tact. Table decorations can be random but still tasteful if done right!

Bird Cage

Bird Cage Table Top Decor

If you’re decorating your home in shabby chic or even in traditional, a small, quaint little bird cage may be the answer. Look for cages from antique stores rather than new ones from the pet store, as these may not be as decorative. You can also easily find decorative bird cages in several home decor stores, so keep an eye out for them if you choose to go this route.

Zen Garden

Modern Zen Dining

For oriental-influenced dining rooms, a zen garden would be perfectly at home as table decor. You can even make your own zen garden in any shape or size you desire, making it easy to customize it to your specific dining room table size and shape. You can include sand, small pebbles and even moss to create unique gardens for your dining table decor.

Apothecary Jars

Apothecary Jar Decor

Either clear, colored or filled with different items, apothecary jars are becoming extremely trendy in the design world. You can find them at a number of home decor retailers in a variety of styles and sizes. Plus, these jars easily mingle with a number of styles from traditional to Victorian, contemporary to eclectic.

These are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling on home accessories for the dining table. Remember, no accessory is off limits as long as it fits your space! Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Home Decor for Bathrooms

Monday, December 19th, 2011

It’s easy to choose home accessories for certain rooms in the home: the living room, the dining room and the bedroom. It can be difficult, however, to choose the right home accessories and decor for a space such as the bathroom. Accessories in the bathroom may be different from accessories in other rooms of the home, but this guide will help you find the right home decor items to suit your bathroom.

Bathroom Accessories

To start, we all know the basic features of a bathroom: the toilet, a sink, and perhaps a vanity, either a tub, shower, or both. There are also faucet fixtures and light fixtures, among other details. However, certain fixtures may be deemed home accessories in the bathroom. For example, towel rods, soap dispensers, and even toilet seats could all be considered accessories in a bathroom.

Home Accessories and Decor for the Bathroom

Oval Mirrors

The mirror is extremely important in the bathroom, so why not move away from the standard builder grade mirror and install mirrors that are more suited to your specific design style? For example, if you have a traditional or contemporary bathroom, consider hanging large oval mirrors over each sink area rather than the standard mirror. This small change can make a dramatic difference in the space.

Furnitures

There are also various furnitures that can be incorporated into the bathroom and not look out of place. Small storage type furnitures, such as small cabinets, linen towers or small shelving units can be a great place to store bathroom items like towels or extra toilet paper. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you may want to incorporate unique touches such as a plant stand with plants or a small accent table.

Charger Plates

When displaying the necessities, such as hand soap or tooth brush holders, consider incorporating new ways to make the space look more elegant or refined. For example, using a charger plate beneath the items can be an unexpected way to create a unique visual statement. Charger plates can also be beneficial, as they can wash off easily to remove soap or water spots, reducing the amount of time spent cleaning bathroom countertops. Furthermore, they can be swapped out with the seasons or changed with your bathroom decor to update the look of the space.

Home Decor

Finally, when choosing the other home accessories for your room, consider matching them to one another. Typically in a bathroom, it is best that the finishes of various items in the space match. This includes towel bars, faucets, shower heads, vanity door hardware (hinges, knobs) and even the toilet roll holder or light fixtures. This helps to create a cohesive look in the bathroom, really tying the entire space together.

Finish options for the bathroom have greatly evolved over the years, so there is easily something for everyone. You can also create a cohesive look throughout your entire home by tying the fixtures in the rest of your home decor to the fixtures in your bathroom. Finish options include brushed silver hues (nickel, chrome,) oil rubbed bronze, gold finishes, brushed gold, antiqued bronze, chrome and many more. Images 12 | 3 | 4 | 5

Now that you’re inspired, why not dress up your bathroom with these home accessories?

Tips for Using Multiple Patterns in a Single Room

Monday, December 12th, 2011

When it comes to home accessories and decor, there are a lot of items out there and thus, a lot of different patterns, colors and textures. In fact, it’s not unusual for a person to fall in love with two or more home accessories with different patterns or color schemes. That being said, home decor still needs to flow properly, even if multiple patterns are used. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to use multiple patterns in a single room.

Select a Scale

Home Decor

When you use multiple patterns on home decor, an easy way to blend these patterns together is by selecting patterns that feature the same scale. For example, if you have chosen a large pattern, you’ll want to choose other patterns that are also equally large in scale.

This can apply to curtains, furniture upholstery, throw pillows, rugs and so forth.

Add Solid Colors

Home Decor

Though you may love your patterns, it’s important to add a few pieces into the room that feature solid colors.

Solid colors can help break up the space visually, letting each pattern stand on its own rather than forcing the competing patterns to rely on one another.

Size on Size

Home Decor

Outside of choosing multiple patterns that are equal in size, another option that many interior designers use is the size on size concept. For example, if you choose a medium sized pattern, you should use it on a medium sized home accessory such as an ottoman or a throw blanket. On the other hand, with a small scale pattern, you’ll want that to be seen on a smaller item such as a throw pillow or a small piece of wall art.

Similar Styles or Color Schemes

Home Accessories and Decor

Finally, another option also used by professionals is the use of patterns that feature similar color schemes or similar styles. This particular path may be more time consuming and may not be as easy to achieve, as it does take a professional eye to spot patterns that will mesh well; especially when you’re not focusing specifically on the pattern size.

Think Outside the Fabric

Home Decor

Patterns aren’t just found on different fabrics for upholstered furniture, drapery and other home accessories. It can also be found on a number of different items including wooden furniture facades, charger plates, frames for wall art, the wall art itself, and so forth.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix and Match

Home Accessories

The most important thing to remember when choosing different patterns is to not over-think things and allow yourself to mix and match different patterns. Home decor doesn’t have to be perfect, life isn’t a magazine! If you love two different fabrics but you think they don’t match, you may be surprised to find that chances are they really do and you’re simply over-thinking things. Most people are drawn to similar items, and that also applies to patterns in home accessories, so keep this in mind when you’re mixing and matching different patterns. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Color Trends: Orange

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Orange. The word can inspire a number of different images from the fruit to a sunset, certain types of flowers to autumn leaves and everything in between. Orange is also a great color to incorporate into a home decor scheme. Even small additions of this hue through various home accessories can be a great way to liven up a space. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to use trendy orange in your home accessories and decor.

Warm Tones

If you’ve got an existing warm color palette, you’ll find that it’s surprisingly easy to bring in home accessories that feature another warm color. Little details, such as adding vibrant orange charger plates beneath your crisp, white china can be a great way to complete your table decor.

San Francisco Sanctuary

Remember, adding a new color into your home decor color scheme or swapping out an old hue in favor of the new, is a great way to stay on-trend with colors. However, make small, inexpensive changes that you can update later once you find yourself drifting away from it.

Cool Tones

Orange also pairs surprisingly well with cooler tones, such as purple, blue and green. In fact, orange and blue, orange and green or orange and purple are all viable home decor color palettes and once you’re finished with the orange hue, you can swap it out for the next trendy shade.

Orange Trends

Consider pairing a fresh, light lime green shade with a deep, warm-toned orange. Teal blue, like that of the Mediterranean sea, also pairs beautifully with orange hues. Keep in mind, these don’t have to be full-blown color palettes either. You can pair these hues with muted neutrals to keep the look grounded and down to earth.

Orange Doesn’t Have to be so… Orange!

Remember that orange can also pop up in home decor in a not-so-orange way. Warm, subtle orange undertones can be found in a number of different hues: chocolate browns, beiges, yellows and so forth.

Orange Trends

There are also hues that are classified as orange but not necessarily like that of the fruit. Rusty oranges and burnt umbers are romantic hues that can be incorporated into neutral, subdued and muted color palettes with the greatest of ease. Don’t be afraid to use muted orange hues in your home accessories and decor, as it will still pack just as much of a punch.

Simple Accents

Finally, adding pops of orange into a space is a great way to incorporate the color without basing an entire color palette around it. Vibrant orange throw pillows or a simple orange vase add a touch of color without being overwhelming. Plus, small home accessories in a vibrant hue are a great way to draw attention to certain details of a room.

Orange Decor Accents

Orange is a bold hue and certainly not for everyone. Those who are daring enough to incorporate this trendy color into their home decor should be applauded. Remember, orange doesn’t have to be in-your-face; it can be muted, subdued and easily blend into your existing color palette if you put forth a little effort. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Finding Home Accessories for Contemporary Decor

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Few people are ready or able to hire a professional interior designer to pick out all the perfect home accessories and home decor for their space. This leaves people to pick out their own home accessories and decor, which can quickly become a daunting task if they’re not sure what to look for. Sure, they might know what style they’d like to use, such as contemporary, but that doesn’t mean they know which home accessories fit a particular style and which ones don’t.

Choosing Contemporary Home Accessories and Decor

If you’re unfamiliar with the differences between modern home decor and contemporary home decor, it can be difficult to make the right choices in terms of accessories. Fortunately, the vast majority of mainstream ‘modern’ or ‘contemporary’ decor can be interchanged in a home. However, if you’re concerned about keeping the two separate, remember that ‘contemporary’ refers to pieces that are the latest and greatest in interior design and home decor trends. Meanwhile, modern pieces can often be reminiscent of mid-century modern decor. So, whenever you’re looking at home accessories and decor, ask yourself if you can envision the piece in your home or in a home from the 1950s.

A Contemporary Living Room

A Modern Living Room

Modern Living Rooms

Next, once you’ve figured out what the differences are between modern and contemporary home accessories, you can start picking things out. The great thing about this particular style is that you can use it to add a bit of flash and glamour to your home decor.

Let’s start by looking at table decor. A great way to top a dining room is through beautiful charger plates. For charger plates, you may want to consider some flashy, trendy pieces. For example, this year is all about thick, chunky weaves. Look for charger plates that are made from thick woven grasses. Another popular trend in contemporary decor is the use of hammered metals. Fortunately, it’s easy to find woven grass charger plates or hammered metal charger plates.

Metal Charger Plates

On the other hand, you could choose to tone down your charger plates and opt for flashy centerpieces instead such as a hammered metal vase or a mirrored vase. Look for items that add a lot of texture to the space, such as a ribbed vase or the hammered variety, which creates visual interest. Since contemporary color palettes are toned down and relatively subdued, it’s not uncommon for people to look for ways to bring a little bit of color into the space through the various home accessories. So, don’t be afraid to throw in a brightly colored piece of table decor such as a teal vase.

Teal Vases Accents

Another popular choice for contemporary home decor is the use of blown glass, whether it be a blown glass light fixture or a blown glass vase. Other materials that work well in contemporary home decor include concrete, various metals in various forms (hammered, polished,) matte ceramics or porcelains, glass and chunky woven fabrics and grasses.

Finding Home Decor and Furniture Bargains for the Home

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Decorating a house is expensive. Between the home accessories and decor, the furniture and the wall art, you could easily spend thousands of dollars. Fortunately, home decor doesn’t have to be expensive. In today’s economy, many families are looking for ways to save money on every day items but few people are aware that this same concept can apply to home accessories and furniture.

Second Hand Stores

Second hand stores are one of the first places you should look for bargains on furnitures, wall decor, and other items. You’d be amazed at what you might find at your local second hand thrift store.

Refinished Furnitures

SticViews (via)

When shopping for items at these types of stores, it’s important to keep an open mind. These are items that have been used and may have dents, scratches or other cosmetic damage. The important thing to remember is that you can clean these items up. For example, perhaps you’ve found a coffee table you love but it’s got a scratch in the finish. Why not clean it up and refinish it? You’d be surprised at how easy it truly is to refinish a small piece of furniture.

Charger Plates

Best Garage Sale & Yard Sales (via)

Also, keep your eyes peeled for good deals. You will be amazed at the items you’ll find at your local good will, from charger plates to oval mirrors to wall clocks.

Online Resources

Consider the internet your own personal and vast wealth. Websites like Craigslist.org and eBay.com, hold a number of deals on home decor items. You can find used designer furniture pieces (or brand new knock-offs) for a fraction of the price. That $4,000 designer couch you love? Chances are, you’ll be able to find one similar to that if you’re willing to do the work and scour the web.

Oval Mirrors

Victorian Replicas (via)

Keep in mind, it may take you 2 or 3 hours or even an entire weekend, but realize that you may end up saving hundreds, if not thousands, while furnishing your own. Plus, you’ll be able to find pieces, like the perfect oval mirror to go in your entryway, that truly fit what you’ve been searching for rather than just settling for whatever you’ve seen on sale at your local retailer.

Antique Stores

If all else fails, consider your local antique stores. Antique stores tend to be hit-or-miss. Sometimes you’ll find that perfect piece you didn’t know you were looking for and it’s a great deal. Other times, you may find yourself searching high and low for a very specific piece and when you find it, well, it might not have been worth it just based on the price.

Garage Sales, Estate Sales

Chances are, you’ve driven around and seen signs for estate sales and garage sales. If you’ve never stopped to check one out, you’re missing out big time! These are great resources for bargain decor items and if you’re lucky, you might come across something you’ve been searching for. Plus, garage sales are a great way to learn the art of haggling. Even if you only get a couple bucks off, that’s still a couple bucks back in your pocket.

These are just a few examples of where to look for bargains on the things you need for your home. In short, there truly are opportunities everywhere.

One Day Home Decor Makeovers

Friday, September 16th, 2011
It’s not unusual to be impatient when completing a home makeover. Sitting for weeks on end waiting for a kitchen or bathroom renovation to be completed, just so you can add a few home accessories as a finishing touch can be agonizing. However, did you know there are a number of one day home decor makeovers you can easily do? You’d be surprised at how you can easily update your home in a single day by doing simple things, like swapping out home accessories and decor items.

Update Dated Fabric in a Dining Room

Upholstered Chair Decor
Frilly Details via

If you’ve got upholstered seats or chair pads in your dining room, you can update this quickly and easily in just a single day by swapping out the old for the new. Check out your local fabric store for the different options you may have in fabrics.

If your existing covers are neutral, you can likely place the new fabric right over top. However, darker shades, prints or patterns may require removal of the old fabric. Simply lift the chair’s seat from the chair and lay it onto the fabric you are choosing. Lay the fabric face-down and lay the seat face-down as well. Then, pulling the fabric tightly, staple it to the bottom of the chair seat.Once finished, replace the seat onto the chair frame and voila: a whole new chair. Repeat until all chairs are complete. Pair your new seat colors with a set of matching charger plates and voila, a whole new dining room!

Paint

Painted RoomMiscellany of a Cheshire Cat via

The quickest and easiest way to update a room’s decor is to paint it. A fresh coat of paint can make everything in a room pop from the wall art to the various furnitures. However, be sure to choose a paint color that accents the room. While it can be tempting to choose a bold new hue, remember, you’re just changing the paint, not the entire room! Not interested in painting an entire room, or have a room that will take several days to complete? Consider painting a single accent wall instead. A new accent wall can spice things up quickly and easily and requires less work than painting the entire room.

Clean Up Old Furnitures

Refinished Wood FurnitureHome Improvement Depot via

If you’ve got a piece of furniture that you love but that is also beat up or stained, consider cleaning it up. It is surprisingly easy to refinish wood furniture. Furthermore, it is simple to clean upholstered furnitures. If cleaning doesn’t work, you can always opt for a new slipcover to freshen things up.

Rearrange the Furnitures in a Room

Interior Furniture Layout

Another quick way to update the look of a room is to rearrange the furniture pieces. You’d be surprised at how a new layout can make a room feel brand new.

Invest in New Wall Art

Wall Art DecorOLX via

Spending the entire day shopping for a new piece or two of wall art can help brighten a room. Be sure to bring paint swatches or fabric swatches with you to help match the artwork to your room’s existing decor.

If you can’t find something new, consider creating it instead. Anyone can create art whether it be a simple canvas of a single color, an abstract painting or even a complex oil painting. Put your creativity to work, you’ll be surprised at what you can come up with.

Making the Most out of Your Bargain Decor

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Bargain home accessories and decor doesn’t ever mean compromising quality and style, it just means you are a frugal shopper and have an eye for creative uses of non-conventional items. There are great ways to refresh and recycle unwanted items.

Thrifty Kitchen Curtains

Color matching with the dishes and towel s gives the feeling that there is organization in the kitchen instead of a hodge podge of “stuff”. Cafe curtains for the kitchen windows is definitely a do it yourself project and you don’t even need to know how to sew. Look in local thrift store for things like aprons or remnants with your kitchen colors on them to match your home accessories.

Begin by measuring the window area to determine the size of fabric you will need, when you find that perfect piece to bring home, throw it in the washer. After the material is dry, cut to the desired length if the bottom has a fringe or ruffle the cut off from the top. With a hot glue gun, fabric glue or even Velcro, wrap the top round a cafe rod making sure the fold is straight. Make enough room to give it a gap. For windows that are covered in tile, you can use a small tension rod in place of the cafe rod.

Show Your True Colors

Tired of looking at the pea green fridge from the 1984? Paint it! There are several different companies that make “fusion” paint for appliances and home accessories. You can also shop around in used appliance stores for new hardware like door handles. You will need a backup option for storing your food while doing this project. For best results, thoroughly clean the outer surface of the entire refrigerator with dishwashing liquid and scrubby to cut the grease and get off ground in dirt. DO NOT DO THIS INSIDE THE HOUSE, over spraying and fumes can be messy and dangerous. Remove all the hardware, doors and tape off chrome with masking tape over lapping about one inch on the joints to prevent bleeding. Follow directions for spraying distance using one long even pass, two or three coats will ensure good coverage and eliminate any thin spots. Allow 4 to 6 hours drying time before replacing doors and hardware.

Bathroom Seaside

Create a beach cottage look in the bathroom with found shells; drift wood, washed up coral on a charger plate or a hurricane lantern. If you haven’t been to the beach lately most craft stores sell bags of cleaned seashells and other beach themed home accessories and decor. A color for the walls like light sea foam or pale sky blue will brighten up the area, color coordinate towels and wash cloths in white and sandy beige, add a print of the seaside. Kids can help too. Have your children, grandchildren, niece or nephew paint a picture of a fish, frame it and put it up for display.

Planning

Master Bedroom

(via)

In order to get the most out of your design, it’s a good idea to do a little planning first. By creating a needs and wants list for your decor, you can better control your budget for the project. A simple sketch of your bedroom can help you to decide where house decor will go, allowing you to concentrate on the design instead of the task at hand.

Classic Designs

Classic Bedroom Design

(via)

Classic decor designs are a great way to get a new bedroom design yet keep it cheap and simple—all while looking good. From basic contemporary to old school traditional, the classic bedroom design often employs the use of table decorations and other knick knacks to define the space. Silver charger plates can be a great way to keep table decor in its place and prevent over cluttering that can easily happen on small dresser or shelving spaces. Soft and subtle neutral colors on bedspreads, wall coverings and accent furnitures help define the bedroom space as a classic decor design.

Cultural Inspiration

Cultural Bedroom Inspirations

Many great bedroom designs use cultural denotations to decorate the space. From Asian to Italian and everything in between, cultural decorating is a great way to get the most out of your bedroom decor. Dorian columns, bamboo or animal print patterns all can be used to make a cultural statement in your bedroom. Cultural wall art and decor can be an affordable way to redecorate any bedroom. While cultural bedroom design is a great way to decorate your bedroom space, overpowering designs can make the space look too complicated. Keep your house decor simple when it comes to cultural decorating.

Animal Themes

For those who love the many animals on this planet—or just a specific one, the animal themed decor is a fantastic look that can be easily created. From the rough and tough elephant to the meek and mild butterfly, animals (and insects) are a good looking design for the bedroom. Animal decors like lizard wall art can provide the perfect décor for a Santa Fe designed theme, while frogs on a flower vase can work perfectly for a rain forest themed bedroom. Animal designs, prints and patterns help accent particular design themes or work perfectly on their own.
