Finishing Touches for Home Decor

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

No room is complete without a few finishing touches. This includes incorporating different home accessories and decor items into the overall scheme of the space. There are a number of home accessories that can help you put the final touches on a space. Besides, no home decor scheme is complete without a few finishing touches and here are a few tips and tricks on how to bring a few finishing touches into your own home.

Be Patient

Modern Home Decor

The main rule of finding home accessories to complete your space is to be patient. It may take you weeks, months or even a year to find all of the right accessories to complete the space.

Be Open to Experiment

That being said, just because it takes you a while to find the right finishing touches, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment with different pieces along the way. Consider incorporating pieces into your home decor that you might not normally have used, you may find that they fit the space. Or, you may find you were right to begin with and they’re just not for you.

Eclectic Home Decor

This includes different accessories such as a large oval mirror, wall art, various table decor such as charger plates and so forth. Remember, home accessories aren’t just candles and vases. Home accessories can even be small accent furniture or even a wall clock.

Other ideas for experimenting could include incorporating fresh flowers into your space, or adding a nice, lush fern.

Modern Wall Clock

Consider a Theme

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably got a few favorite interests or hobbies. Why not incorporate this as a theme into your home decor scheme. Examples could include traveling, pets, photography, flowers, books, movies, sports, safari animals, antiques, vehicles and so forth.

Surfer Themed Kids Room

For example, let’s say you’re interested in vehicles. You don’t necessarily have to throw up posters of half-naked women draped over corvettes onto the walls as your wall decor. You could easily find tasteful pieces, such as an oil painting of an old Ford Model T or black and white photographs of closeups of car parts. Be creative, not tacky!

Don’t Forget About the Obvious

Most importantly, don’t forget about the most obvious finishing touches of home decor. For example, throw pillows for your sofa or a throw blanket over your favorite arm chair. Book ends to hold up your book collection or perhaps even a wall clock.

Throw Pillow Accents

When you’re working to create the perfect room, it’s not unusual for you to forget about the basic details that every room needs. If it helps, make a checklist of everything you feel your room should have: a large oval mirror, throw pillows, a throw blanket, table lamps, various furnitures and so forth. Then, you’re less likely to forget anything when decorating your room.

Modern Home Decor

Remember, finishing touches aren’t just the tiny details. They’re also in the big pieces. It could be the ornate frames on oval mirrors you’ve purchased or the matching nailhead trim on the arm chair and sofa.

Hosting a Dinner Party: Home Decor Preparation

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Whether you’re hosting a small luncheon for friends or a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner, there are a few areas of home decor that could probably use some sprucing up. Fortunately, swapping out a few home accessories and a good cleaning can really improve the look of a space. Plus, home accessories and decor are easy to obtain and inexpensive, making it especially easy to update the look of your home for your next dinner party.

Charger Plates

Charger plates are beneficial to a dinner party for a number of reasons. First, they tie in your china or dishes with the home decor style in your dining room. Secondly, they protect wood tables from damage from hot plates. They also protect the table from food spills. So, there’s no reason not to invest in a quality set of charger plates.

Home Decor Preparation

Plus, charger plates come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes, so there’s a set to match everyone’s home decor. Consider combining trends into your charger plates and purchase chunky grass woven charger plates or charger plates in bright, colorful jewel tones.

Enlarge Small Spaces

Just because you have a small space, doesn’t mean you can’t create the illusion of more space—especially if you’re hosting a dinner party. Consider altering your home decor slightly and investing in clear acrylic furnitures, such as dining chairs or a console table to help open up the space.

Home Decor Preparation

Another option is to install a large mirror onto one of the walls. Whether you choose a square or oval mirror, find a mirror that fits your space and your home decor style. Large mirrors create the illusion of more space but they also reflect additional natural light into the space, which can help brighten the look and feel of your dining room.

Table Decor

Part of hosting a dinner party or luncheon is having a beautiful centerpiece or other table decor to top off the room. This can be as simple as a few tea lights, a large scale candelabra or holiday themed table decor. Just remember, if you think there may be a lot of talking, choose table decor that is lower so that it does not block people out across the table.

Home Decor Preparation

Table decor can also be little details such as cute little place cards, napkin rings and silverware.

Home Decor Preparation

Other ideas for table decor include floral arrangements, fresh fruit or vegetable displays, small or large apothecary jars, woven baskets, vases, hurricanes and much more.

Deep Clean

Home Decor Preparation

Of course, hosting a dinner party is more than just table decor and pretty place mats. Guests are going to feel more at home if your space is clean and inviting. So, prior to the party, be sure to do all of the normal things you would such as dusting and vacuuming. Be sure to also wipe down your windows, put away any unnecessary clutter and if you have upholstered chairs, be sure to clean those as well. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Home Decor for Bathrooms

Monday, December 19th, 2011

It’s easy to choose home accessories for certain rooms in the home: the living room, the dining room and the bedroom. It can be difficult, however, to choose the right home accessories and decor for a space such as the bathroom. Accessories in the bathroom may be different from accessories in other rooms of the home, but this guide will help you find the right home decor items to suit your bathroom.

Bathroom Accessories

To start, we all know the basic features of a bathroom: the toilet, a sink, and perhaps a vanity, either a tub, shower, or both. There are also faucet fixtures and light fixtures, among other details. However, certain fixtures may be deemed home accessories in the bathroom. For example, towel rods, soap dispensers, and even toilet seats could all be considered accessories in a bathroom.

Home Accessories and Decor for the Bathroom

Oval Mirrors

The mirror is extremely important in the bathroom, so why not move away from the standard builder grade mirror and install mirrors that are more suited to your specific design style? For example, if you have a traditional or contemporary bathroom, consider hanging large oval mirrors over each sink area rather than the standard mirror. This small change can make a dramatic difference in the space.

Furnitures

There are also various furnitures that can be incorporated into the bathroom and not look out of place. Small storage type furnitures, such as small cabinets, linen towers or small shelving units can be a great place to store bathroom items like towels or extra toilet paper. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you may want to incorporate unique touches such as a plant stand with plants or a small accent table.

Charger Plates

When displaying the necessities, such as hand soap or tooth brush holders, consider incorporating new ways to make the space look more elegant or refined. For example, using a charger plate beneath the items can be an unexpected way to create a unique visual statement. Charger plates can also be beneficial, as they can wash off easily to remove soap or water spots, reducing the amount of time spent cleaning bathroom countertops. Furthermore, they can be swapped out with the seasons or changed with your bathroom decor to update the look of the space.

Home Decor

Finally, when choosing the other home accessories for your room, consider matching them to one another. Typically in a bathroom, it is best that the finishes of various items in the space match. This includes towel bars, faucets, shower heads, vanity door hardware (hinges, knobs) and even the toilet roll holder or light fixtures. This helps to create a cohesive look in the bathroom, really tying the entire space together.

Finish options for the bathroom have greatly evolved over the years, so there is easily something for everyone. You can also create a cohesive look throughout your entire home by tying the fixtures in the rest of your home decor to the fixtures in your bathroom. Finish options include brushed silver hues (nickel, chrome,) oil rubbed bronze, gold finishes, brushed gold, antiqued bronze, chrome and many more. Images 12 | 3 | 4 | 5

Now that you’re inspired, why not dress up your bathroom with these home accessories?

Trendy Home Decor Styles for 2012

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

With home accessories and decor, style is everything. Certain home decor styles are going to start coming into their own during the 2012 year, so it’s worth noting what these styles are. This can also help you stay ahead of the curve when choosing new home accessories for your space. Here are a few of the expected trends for home decor in 2012.

Contemporary Chic

Contemporary Chic

‘Contemporary Chic’ has slowly risen in the past few months and will continue to grow in popularity in 2012. Look for home accessories that feature clean lines and modern shapes, such as the drum shade. Other examples include large oval mirrors, mirror finished furniture, hammered metal vases and bowls, crystal spheres all of which can be combined with neutral color palettes paired with pops of color.

Industrial Chic

Industrial Chic

A year of the ‘chic’ styles, industrial chic is a style that combines the rusty gold of antique stops with clean, contemporary style. Look at this home decor style as an elegant, refined version of steam punk or industrial decor. It can include items mentioned in ‘contemporary chic’ as well as home accessories such as steel stools, recycled glass light fixtures, apothecary jars, mixed media wall art and more.

Vintage Farmhouse

Vintage Modern

This style may also be referred to as “vintage chic” or “farmhouse chic,” and includes worn, well loved pieces combined with modern conveniences. Examples could include cloche or bell jars, lace doilies, light fixtures that use old mason jars as glass shades and furniture that features hand carving and well worn, well-loved detailing.

Rustic Home Decor

Rustic Chic

Speaking of all these vintage styles, rustic home decor will also be making a comeback in 2012. Elegant rustic lodges with luxury items, shabby-chic-meets-rustic or cabin-in-the-woods rustic are all options; as this style can go a number of different ways.

Global Decor

Global Decor

Like many home decor styles, global decor is making the cycle around yet again for 2012. Expect to see plenty of global influences in various home styles, as global elements are easy to incorporate into existing design palettes. Hand carved home accessories and furniture, mosaic mirrors, Moroccan details and so forth.

Trendy Colors for 2012

Color Trends 2012

A number of colors will also be trendy for 2012, but unlike other styles, colors are one of the easiest ways to incorporate a trend into your space without spending a ton of cash. Look for bright hues such as yellow, as well as the new neutral: gray.

It is important to keep in mind that when it comes to trends, less is more. It may be tempting to redecorate an entire space using trendy home accessories and decor, but it can result in a space that feels dated and dreary after just a few months. So keep this in mind, as you don’t want to waste money having to redecorate once your home decor trend has gone out-of-style. Images 1 | 23 | 4 | 5 | 6

Mirrors for Every Room in the Home

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Mirrors are a hot trend and they’re also extremely neutral home accessories, making them easy to blend seamlessly into existing home decor. That being said, it can be difficult trying to find the right mirror for every room of your home. Blending home accessories and decor is an important part of interior design and this guide will help you get started on choosing the right mirror for every room in your home.

Get Creative

Lattice Mirror

First and foremost, there is absolutely no reason you can create a decorative lattice work for over the top of your mirror. Whether it’s an oval mirror or a square mirror, you can easily create a pattern for over top. Plus, you can paint it any number of colors and design any pattern you want so that it seamlessly matches the room’s decor. This idea is great for bedrooms, living rooms and guest rooms.

Pairs

Mirrors on Accent Wall

Mirrors that are grouped together, such as in pairs, work for both small and large spaces. For example, two small square mirrors, around 10 inches in size, create the illusion of a larger piece of wall art when hung together. Take note of what shapes work in pairs and what don’t for your style of decor. You may love the oval mirror you found, but it might not be a good option for this wall arrangement.

This style also works well with traditional, contemporary and modern styles of decor. Avoid frames with this type of mirror, as it can detract from the overall appearance of the grouping itself. However, you can opt for thin frames if you absolutely must (and then again, all home decor rules are meant to be broken once in a while).

Paired mirrors work well every room of the home from the bedroom to the living room, into the dining room and even the kitchen.

The Leaning Floor Mirror

Mirror Leaning on Wall

Leaning floor mirrors are extremely trendy, but they’re also extremely versatile. In the bedroom, a large floor mirror is great for checking your appearance before heading out. It can also be placed in the foyer for that same purpose. In the living room, it can be used to bring in more natural light, which can help highlight other home accessories and decor in the space. Just keep in mind, floor mirrors can be expensive, so choose wisely!

Neutrality

Contemporary Look with Mirror

Lastly, certain areas of your home are best left neutral. The guest bedroom is a perfect example of this. When choosing mirrors for the guest room, opt for simple shapes such as an oval mirror or a circular mirror. Choose a shape that reflects your style of home decor and avoid being overly trendy with the frame. Remember, you want the space to be comfortable for your guests and the easiest way to do this is to avoid trends and other forms of personalization.

These are just a few tips to help you get started on choosing mirrors for the rooms in your home. Remember, rules are meant to be broken so go with your gut feeling on what works best in each space of your home. Images 1 | 2 | 34

Designing and Decorating a Powder Bathroom

Monday, December 5th, 2011
Powder bathrooms are bathrooms that do not have a shower or tub. Usually they are located off of a main area and, because they are a smaller space, they are a great place to showcase your home accessories and decor. There are many things to consider when working on a design for your powder bathroom. For instance, bathroom lighting is important when thinking about this space, as many bathroom light fixtures are simply utilitarian and lack the “wow” factor; powder bathrooms need “wow!”

When thinking about decorating a smaller space like your powder bathroom, think about what style you want to portray. For instance, do you want a classic design and a more traditional space? Maybe you already have a pedestal sink or an antique chest with a drop-in sink to work with?

Powder Bathroom

Traditional elements like pretty ceiling lighting (like crystal chandeliers) or elegant oval mirrors are always welcome in classic spaces, and they definitely tell your guests you surround yourself with elegance and class.

Powder Room

On the other hand, mirrors with square edges and pendant lighting usually lean towards a more modern feel for a space. Modern spaces don’t have to feel cold and unfinished. In fact, some of the best interiors have a modern touch.

Powder Room
The lines of the faucets, lighting fixtures, accessories, and home decor play a major role in determining “style” as well. The more detailed and intricate the faucets and lighting fixtures are in a space, usually the more traditional. And, the more straight or angular lines, usually the more modern the space.

Powder Room
Consider coordinating the finishes in your powder bathroom because… well, it is small. Your faucets, lighting fixtures and wall art will band together to shine as one beautiful space if you do.

Powder Room

When it comes to bathroom lighting, select bulbs with enough light to brighten the space, but be careful not to over-light the room. Your light should not be brighter than the adjoining exterior room, even if your powder bathroom does not have any natural light.

Regardless of style, remember that your powder bath can be a major statement in your home. It is a private space that guests will see, but it is also a space that needs to have a lot of “punch” because of its size. Definitely don’t go “boring” in this small room! If anything, layer your design elements to create a well designed, one-of-a-kind space that others won’t forget! Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Home Decor Tips: Color Palette Ideas

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Choosing home accessories and decor can be fun, but you’ll also need a color palette to help you pull everything together. Home decor is about blending all of the elements together: home accessories, furnitures, wall art and so forth. Here are a few recommendations for different color palettes for your latest home decor or remodeling project.

Color Palette Ideas

Color Palette Idea

When you begin thinking about a color palette, you need to keep in mind that you’re not just choosing a paint color. You’re choosing colors for your home accessories, flooring, furnitures and paint. A color palette is exactly that: a palette. It involves a number of colors, not just a singular color that you put up onto the walls, so never forget that!

Black and White Color Palettes

Black and White Design

Black and white color palettes are a great option for a number of home decor styles from contemporary to ultra modern. Plus, black and white are technically neutral colors and therefore can be paired with a variety of other accent colors ranging from pink to turquoise and everything in between. You can opt to have white walls with black lacquered furnitures, combined with vibrant, bold wall art and silver home accessories to create a beautiful Hollywood regency style look in your home.

Red Color Palettes

Red Bedroom Design

Whether you pair your shade of red with white, turquoise or other shades of reds and pinks, you may find that a red color is exactly what your space needs. Red home decor is easy to come by and easy to work into a number of different styles from country chic with apples to ultra modern with high gloss red furnitures in a minimalist style or even in retro home decor when paired with shades of turquoise.

Blue Color Palettes

Contemporary Blue Home

It’s no surprise that blue is one of the most popular colors when it comes to home decor. There are thousands of different hues of blue from navy to turquoise, light baby blue and every little shade between. Like many colors, you can incorporate a blue color palette into a number of styles: modern, retro, contemporary, country and so forth.

Green

Green Home Design

After blue comes green in terms of popularity. Green is a natural color, so it’s no surprise that it’s a favorite when it comes to home decor color palettes. Hues of green work well in traditional, contemporary and country styles of decor. Olive green upholstered furnitures paired with warm beige walls can help create a natural, traditional feeling home; but that’s just one example of how green can work well in home decor.

Beiges, Off-Whites

Contemporary Neutral Design

Beiges, off-whites, tans and other neutral shades of browns are a perfect choice for creating a color palette. Plus, you can pair neutral shades with a variety of other colors to create home decor color palettes that set your decor apart from the rest. Don’t be afraid to pair these hues with blues, greens, even reds, oranges and so forth.

Choosing a color palette is important, but it isn’t everything. You’ll find that you can develop a color palette as you go along while decorating. Remember, it doesn’t have to be instant and sometimes the best planned schemes are accidental!

Tips for Decorating a Small Room

Monday, November 7th, 2011

When it comes to choosing home accessories and decor for a small space, whether it be a single room or an entire home, it can get a little tricky. There are home accessories you absolutely love, but you question whether you’ve really got the space for them. Other times, you know you don’t have the space for it but perhaps you buy it anyway, whether it be furnitures, wall art or other types of home decor. Here are a few tips and tricks for decorating a small space with ease.

Come Up With a Plan

Some people work well just by going into the stores and picking out the perfect home accessories for their space. Others simply don’t know where to start or how to start, for that matter. It may be beneficial to come up with a plan before you start any shopping. Determine the layout for your furnitures, which can help you find the right size and scale when out shopping for these pieces.

Home Decor

Look at where you’d like to hang wall art and where you’d like to see little individual home accessories sitting. Then, take it to the store with you. Have a list, take measurements of your space, do whatever it takes to give you a clear, concrete idea of your space and what needs to be done to make it beautiful.

Create a Focal Point

No matter what size home you live in, you need a focal point for every room. If you’re decorating a small bedroom, then it’s easy but for the other rooms in your home, it may be a little bit more difficult. If any room in your home has a fireplace, then chances are, that’s your natural focal point.

Home Decor

However, you can easily create faux focal points by using large or otherwise attention-grabbing pieces of wall art and wall decor. You can do it by the way you arrange your furnitures in a room or you can even draw focus to a window with a view. Whatever you choose, just be sure to give the eye somewhere to land whenever you, your family or guests enter the room.

Multifunctional, Multipurpose

Home Decor

Don’t be afraid to work with your small space. Create multifunctional, multipurpose pieces such as an ottoman that doubles not only as storage, but as additional seating for guests and when you place a tray on it, quadruples into a cocktail table. This single piece of furniture suddenly assumes the job of multiple furniture, thus making your space more efficient.

Don’t Be Afraid of Color

Home Decor

The misconception many people have is that small spaces must be painted light colors. This isn’t true. If you want a bold hue on the wall, go for it. Instead of being afraid of color, consider limiting your color choices a bit to help create a comfortable, cozy feeling rather than a cramped, ‘this-space-is-way-too-small’ feeling. After all, part of a good home decor scheme is having a good color palette to back things up. Images | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

What Is French Provincial Interior Design?

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

There are thousands of different home decor styles, including French provincial. However, many people are left wondering exactly what this style is and what home accessories and decor best suit it. This guide will give you the low down on French provincial and help you find the right home accessories to match.

French Provincial Home Decor

To start, French provincial is a style that reflects how people’s homes were in the 1600s and 1700s in the provinces of France. Typically these people were not as well off as those who were living in cities and this style reflects that. With French provincial home decor, you see less ornate detailing and more focus gets put onto function and flow.

French Provincial Furnitures

To start, when choosing furnitures for this style, you’ll need to remember function over detailing. Since people in the French provinces had little money, they didn’t spend it on ornate or grand furniture. Instead, they focused what little money they had on pieces that served a purpose and wouldn’t cost them a small fortune.

French Provincial Armoire

Since they had less money, they found ways to reduce taxes. In France, many homes were taxed based on the number of rooms and the closet counted as a room. So, instead of having closets, people in the French provinces chose to build armoires and other large scale furnitures to hold their items. In modern home decor, you may not have a real use for an armoire but there are ways to incorporate one into your space. Consider using one for your television in the living room or for game storage in a family room or den.

Home Accessories for French Provincial Homes

Wall art is not something that you would have found in homes of that era. Wall decor meant spending money on unnecessary items. However, the people of this time did believe in purchasing wall mirrors for their space. Mirrors reflect light, making a space feel more open and airy and most importantly, could bring outdoor views indoors.

 French Provincial Oval Mirror

You can use mirrors of any size or shape: square mirrors, oval mirrors, gold framed mirrors or plain framed mirrors. This is one of the more flexible parts of French provincial home decor.

Another popular accent in French provincial home decor is items that are embroidered. In the 17th and 18th centuries, people didn’t have televisions or smartphones and found other ways to occupy any little free time they had. For women, this often meant working on embroidering. You can incorporate embroidered pillows, curtains, blankets, towels and other items into the various rooms of your home if you choose this particular style.

French Provincial Home Decor

Of course, keep in mind that you are incorporating an “old” style of decor into a modern home; so don’t be afraid to put your own modern twist on things. Monogramming over floral embroidering, hand carved furnitures with not-as-ornate details painted a bold hue such as pink or reupholstered in a vibrant, funky pattern and so forth. Interior design and home decor is about interpretation, and like any art form, it is not set in stone!

We hope you enjoyed this beautiful post! If you’re interested in decorating in French provincial style, why not start off with adding some oval mirrors and more to your home!

Trends in Mirrors

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Mirrors have moved from the walls and into other areas of home accessories and decor. Of course, this also means that new trends have come about and there are a number of new home accessories that can bring these trends into your home decor. Fortunately, mirrors are one trend that doesn’t seem to go away but rather manifests itself in different ways over the years. Here are some recent trends in mirrors that have emerged over the past few years.

Furnitures

Mirrored furnitures are one trend on the rise in interior design. You can find mirrored dining tables, console tables, side tables, accent tables and more. This can be expensive to invest in, especially for a trend.

Mirror Decor

If you’re on a budget but you love the look of this trend, why not find ways to incorporate it into your furnitures on the cheap? For example, if you have an oval dining table, you can measure it out then visit your local glass specialist, who can cut an oval mirror the exact size of your dining table top. Then, simply lay the mirror on top. Just be sure to mention that it’s going on your table, as they may have thicker or heavier duty mirrors that may be safer.

Mirror Decor

You can also attach small mirrors to the fronts of small tables, drawers of dressers or shelves to create a look that packs a similar punch. Remember, trends don’t have to be all-or-nothing. You can easily incorporate mirrored furniture into your space without investing an arm and a leg.

Wall Art

Mirrors are making a come back as wall decor. You can create arrangements using a number of different sized mirrors and different shapes such as square or oval mirrors. Then, arrange them on the floor in a pleasing way before hanging them in a collage on your wall. You can also incorporate a single mirror into your existing wall collage, without having several mirrors but rather mixing the mirror with other wall art in your collection.

Mirror Decor

Not interesting in a collage? Consider investing in a large scale mirror for one of the rooms in your home. Mirrors reflect natural light and also make a space feel larger, so they’re perfect for any room in the home. Plus, different styles exist to match different styles of home decor, so you’re sure to find a mirror that fits your space.

Mirror Decor

Though typically interior designers recommend against investing in trends, mirrors are one trend that you can safely invest in without fear of it going out of style. However, as with any trend, there are certain guidelines you should adhere to. For example, avoid trendy finishes on the mirror, such as etching or embedded trim, as these can date the mirror and look them out of style. Remember, however, that your frames can easily be swapped out as your style of home decor changes and you can find frames in traditional, contemporary or modern styles. Images [ 1 / 2 / 3 / 4]
