Home Decor for Bathrooms

Monday, December 19th, 2011

It’s easy to choose home accessories for certain rooms in the home: the living room, the dining room and the bedroom. It can be difficult, however, to choose the right home accessories and decor for a space such as the bathroom. Accessories in the bathroom may be different from accessories in other rooms of the home, but this guide will help you find the right home decor items to suit your bathroom.

Bathroom Accessories

To start, we all know the basic features of a bathroom: the toilet, a sink, and perhaps a vanity, either a tub, shower, or both. There are also faucet fixtures and light fixtures, among other details. However, certain fixtures may be deemed home accessories in the bathroom. For example, towel rods, soap dispensers, and even toilet seats could all be considered accessories in a bathroom.

Home Accessories and Decor for the Bathroom

Oval Mirrors

The mirror is extremely important in the bathroom, so why not move away from the standard builder grade mirror and install mirrors that are more suited to your specific design style? For example, if you have a traditional or contemporary bathroom, consider hanging large oval mirrors over each sink area rather than the standard mirror. This small change can make a dramatic difference in the space.

Furnitures

There are also various furnitures that can be incorporated into the bathroom and not look out of place. Small storage type furnitures, such as small cabinets, linen towers or small shelving units can be a great place to store bathroom items like towels or extra toilet paper. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you may want to incorporate unique touches such as a plant stand with plants or a small accent table.

Charger Plates

When displaying the necessities, such as hand soap or tooth brush holders, consider incorporating new ways to make the space look more elegant or refined. For example, using a charger plate beneath the items can be an unexpected way to create a unique visual statement. Charger plates can also be beneficial, as they can wash off easily to remove soap or water spots, reducing the amount of time spent cleaning bathroom countertops. Furthermore, they can be swapped out with the seasons or changed with your bathroom decor to update the look of the space.

Home Decor

Finally, when choosing the other home accessories for your room, consider matching them to one another. Typically in a bathroom, it is best that the finishes of various items in the space match. This includes towel bars, faucets, shower heads, vanity door hardware (hinges, knobs) and even the toilet roll holder or light fixtures. This helps to create a cohesive look in the bathroom, really tying the entire space together.

Finish options for the bathroom have greatly evolved over the years, so there is easily something for everyone. You can also create a cohesive look throughout your entire home by tying the fixtures in the rest of your home decor to the fixtures in your bathroom. Finish options include brushed silver hues (nickel, chrome,) oil rubbed bronze, gold finishes, brushed gold, antiqued bronze, chrome and many more. Images 12 | 3 | 4 | 5

Now that you’re inspired, why not dress up your bathroom with these home accessories?

Designing and Decorating a Powder Bathroom

Monday, December 5th, 2011
Powder bathrooms are bathrooms that do not have a shower or tub. Usually they are located off of a main area and, because they are a smaller space, they are a great place to showcase your home accessories and decor. There are many things to consider when working on a design for your powder bathroom. For instance, bathroom lighting is important when thinking about this space, as many bathroom light fixtures are simply utilitarian and lack the “wow” factor; powder bathrooms need “wow!”

When thinking about decorating a smaller space like your powder bathroom, think about what style you want to portray. For instance, do you want a classic design and a more traditional space? Maybe you already have a pedestal sink or an antique chest with a drop-in sink to work with?

Powder Bathroom

Traditional elements like pretty ceiling lighting (like crystal chandeliers) or elegant oval mirrors are always welcome in classic spaces, and they definitely tell your guests you surround yourself with elegance and class.

On the other hand, mirrors with square edges and pendant lighting usually lean towards a more modern feel for a space. Modern spaces don’t have to feel cold and unfinished. In fact, some of the best interiors have a modern touch.

Powder Room
The lines of the faucets, lighting fixtures, accessories, and home decor play a major role in determining “style” as well. The more detailed and intricate the faucets and lighting fixtures are in a space, usually the more traditional. And, the more straight or angular lines, usually the more modern the space.

Powder Room
Consider coordinating the finishes in your powder bathroom because… well, it is small. Your faucets, lighting fixtures and wall art will band together to shine as one beautiful space if you do.

When it comes to bathroom lighting, select bulbs with enough light to brighten the space, but be careful not to over-light the room. Your light should not be brighter than the adjoining exterior room, even if your powder bathroom does not have any natural light.

Regardless of style, remember that your powder bath can be a major statement in your home. It is a private space that guests will see, but it is also a space that needs to have a lot of “punch” because of its size. Definitely don’t go “boring” in this small room! If anything, layer your design elements to create a well designed, one-of-a-kind space that others won’t forget! Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Create A Tasteful Bathroom with Basic Bathroom Décor

Friday, July 8th, 2011

A bathroom without house décor is like a bathroom without water—it’s not going to go well. That’s why it’s important to come up with a good design plan before you begin any home improvement projects. Spice up your bathroom design with these basics of bathroom décor and you’ll be sure to get a great design that you’ll love for years to come.

Making a Plan

It’s in your best interest as with any home improvement project to create a list of your needs and wants. This can help you get a functional set of good looking décor items that pulls double duty in your bathroom design. A simple blueprint sketch up can be a good idea for larger bathroom spaces.

Display

Your décor isn’t going to show off itself. You’ll need to create a unique and eye catching display to showcase your décor in the bathroom. While items like wall art easily displays itself, table decorations need a good out of the way place to rest. Small benches, stools and ottomans with a flat wood or stone surface are the perfect out of the way space in the bathroom for your table top décor.

Displaying Décor Tip: Décor doesn’t have to lay flat on a tabletop surface to be displayed. Vanities, alcoves, cubbies and shelving all work in unison to display traditional task items like soap and towels as well as fashionable items like your favorite candle or flower vase on eye catching horizontal surfaces.

Mirrors

A mirror in the bathroom is not only a functional and necessary bathroom accessory; it can also be a fashionable one too. You don’t have to settle for the basic and bland rectangular mirror. Small oval mirrors set against a bare wall can make a huge transformation in your bathroom décor design. Mirrors help expand the room’s width and carry a reflection that plays perfect with natural and artificial lighting.

Mirror Décor Tip: Mirrors can work great in any design. But they don’t always have to be attached to the wall. Mirrors work well as a charger plate, makeup tray or soap display for the perfect horizontal mirror display.

Vanity Décor

The vanity is one of the best places to store and display décor. Home accessories like dried flowers, potpourri satchels, and glass figurines are all great vanity décor items for any bathroom display. Modernist décor makes use of toothbrush holders, soap dispensers and jewelry dishes to create a functioning and fashionable high-tech display.

Vanity Décor Tip: A vanity can be a really small place for décor and can easily be knocked about. It’s a good idea to choose décor that’s short and squat with a wide base to prevent spills and accidents that can break sensitive décor pieces easily.

Using Mirrors to Amplify Space and Light in Your Home

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Increasing the space in any home without having to undergo major renovations can be a trying task for any homeowner. Limited by budget or other constraints, like environment or simply having nowhere to build, can frustrate anyone. But there are ways to open up rooms and increase size without having to extend the floor area or break down walls. It all can boil down to the use of mirrors.

Designing around available space can also be a challenge for renters or those who live in smaller units, like lofts, condominiums and apartments. Landlords will often forbid ripping up floors or breaking down walls and sometimes the owner or renter is left with awkward corners and strange areas that look like horror movie sets.

Homeowners often overlook the importance of using mirrors when designing rooms simply because they do not understand the way they amplify space.  Mirrors can be a wonderful design aspect of any home. Their versatility allows them to have multiple uses when it comes to decorating a home.

A typical use of decorative mirrors can be found in obvious rooms of the house, like the bathroom or the bedroom. After all, the primary use of the looking-glass was to observe ones reflection. Think about using mirrors in inventive or novel ways.

Light is one of the key aspects of decorating a home. Not all people can afford to have expansive bay windows or wall ceilings but placing mirrors in key areas can serve to create an illusion of more light inside the home.

More natural light in your home equals less electricity consumption simply because you turn on the lights later in the day. Placing a mirror in a spot that reflects natural light from windows or entrances can not only be attractive but also practical. Simply figure out where the light comes from (say an east facing window) and position the mirror at an angle that will allow it to reflect the light.

Create the illusion of space in your home by placing them in tight areas like stairways or hallways to create the illusion of length or width. Placing one opposite outdoor or garden views can create the effect of expanding the outdoors into a foyer or living area. Placing mirrors near an entrance hall or above the dining table creates depth even in the smallest of rooms.

Decorative wall mirrors, on the other hand, are mirrors that have ornately designed frames. They range from ultra modern designs to antique beauties passed down from generation to generation. A small bedroom can benefit greatly from a mirror hung by the headboard like the one above.

There are a lot of other design tricks that can be used, such as manipulating storage space with the “less is more approach” to create a beautiful, livable space that can be enjoyed to the fullest. Using mirrors is just one of them. Tell us some of your ideas to manipulate space in your home!
