Decorative Containers: Not Just for Storing Stuff

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Let’s face it: our homes are full of junk. This junk may or may not be important to us, but in the end we have to store and sort it one way or another.

And if you’re a sharp decorator, you will learn how to store this junk in style!
Simply take your pick among one or all of these artful and creative decorative containers to hold a myriad selection of objects in your home:

Decorative Boxes

One of the most commonly overlooked but sorely needed storage devices in many homes. These plucky little things can hold just about anything in your home, from pearl necklaces to medical supplies.

The interesting thing about decorative boxes is that there is a whole lot of room for creativity with them. You can have dark, mysterious resin boxes in oriental shapes. You can also have wooden boxes disguised as books stacked on top of each other. Heck, there are even gigantic boxes shaped in differently-colored dice cubes! Such creative boxes allow you to incorporate your own personality into them.

Decorative Baskets

Boxes can hold some things, but baskets can hold a lot of other things as well – albeit making it easier to carry stuff around. The lighter design and the standard inclusion of handles make it a whole lot easier to move these pieces around.

The unique thing about decorative baskets is that many designs impart this very earthy, naturalistic feel. This is particularly true for baskets made from woven materials like rattan. That is unless you choose more contemporary designs with modern materials – like bright plastic buckets or cast iron ones. Then you basically remove the rules for decorative baskets being earthy and tribal and stuff – but they still add a lighter, more whimsical feel for decorative storage devices.

Decorative Jars and Pots

If you want more solid storage pieces, though, then you really can’t go wrong with jars and pots. These taller, heavier pieces are designed to hold all sorts of items – from liquids to solids and are practically staples in any household.

The particular design of a jar or pot falls up to you to choose. There are the classical designs reminiscent of Grecian and Roman designs, while there are pieces with the distinct patterns and shapes of Indian or Turkish origins. And then there are the wackier pieces where words do no justice to their uniqueness.

Decorative Kitchen Canister Sets

Anyone who has spent a minute of their lives in a kitchen will know how chaotic it can be. Maybe this is why the kitchen is the room in the house with the most number of storage devices in it – from refrigerators to salt and pepper shakers.

Canister sets, however, can make your kitchen a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing place. Everything from colorful flower sets to chrome-finished canisters is fair game. You can even get in touch with your more playful side and top your kitchen counters with mini-garbage cans just for fun.

Remember that just because you need to put stuff away doesn’t mean you have to use plain old boxes. Be creative with how you store things and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful interior décor!
