Home Decor for Bathrooms

Monday, December 19th, 2011

It’s easy to choose home accessories for certain rooms in the home: the living room, the dining room and the bedroom. It can be difficult, however, to choose the right home accessories and decor for a space such as the bathroom. Accessories in the bathroom may be different from accessories in other rooms of the home, but this guide will help you find the right home decor items to suit your bathroom.

Bathroom Accessories

To start, we all know the basic features of a bathroom: the toilet, a sink, and perhaps a vanity, either a tub, shower, or both. There are also faucet fixtures and light fixtures, among other details. However, certain fixtures may be deemed home accessories in the bathroom. For example, towel rods, soap dispensers, and even toilet seats could all be considered accessories in a bathroom.

Home Accessories and Decor for the Bathroom

Oval Mirrors

The mirror is extremely important in the bathroom, so why not move away from the standard builder grade mirror and install mirrors that are more suited to your specific design style? For example, if you have a traditional or contemporary bathroom, consider hanging large oval mirrors over each sink area rather than the standard mirror. This small change can make a dramatic difference in the space.

Furnitures

There are also various furnitures that can be incorporated into the bathroom and not look out of place. Small storage type furnitures, such as small cabinets, linen towers or small shelving units can be a great place to store bathroom items like towels or extra toilet paper. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you may want to incorporate unique touches such as a plant stand with plants or a small accent table.

Charger Plates

When displaying the necessities, such as hand soap or tooth brush holders, consider incorporating new ways to make the space look more elegant or refined. For example, using a charger plate beneath the items can be an unexpected way to create a unique visual statement. Charger plates can also be beneficial, as they can wash off easily to remove soap or water spots, reducing the amount of time spent cleaning bathroom countertops. Furthermore, they can be swapped out with the seasons or changed with your bathroom decor to update the look of the space.

Home Decor

Finally, when choosing the other home accessories for your room, consider matching them to one another. Typically in a bathroom, it is best that the finishes of various items in the space match. This includes towel bars, faucets, shower heads, vanity door hardware (hinges, knobs) and even the toilet roll holder or light fixtures. This helps to create a cohesive look in the bathroom, really tying the entire space together.

Finish options for the bathroom have greatly evolved over the years, so there is easily something for everyone. You can also create a cohesive look throughout your entire home by tying the fixtures in the rest of your home decor to the fixtures in your bathroom. Finish options include brushed silver hues (nickel, chrome,) oil rubbed bronze, gold finishes, brushed gold, antiqued bronze, chrome and many more. Images 12 | 3 | 4 | 5

Making the Most out of Your Bargain Decor

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Bargain home accessories and decor doesn’t ever mean compromising quality and style, it just means you are a frugal shopper and have an eye for creative uses of non-conventional items. There are great ways to refresh and recycle unwanted items.

Thrifty Kitchen Curtains

Color matching with the dishes and towel s gives the feeling that there is organization in the kitchen instead of a hodge podge of “stuff”. Cafe curtains for the kitchen windows is definitely a do it yourself project and you don’t even need to know how to sew. Look in local thrift store for things like aprons or remnants with your kitchen colors on them to match your home accessories.

Begin by measuring the window area to determine the size of fabric you will need, when you find that perfect piece to bring home, throw it in the washer. After the material is dry, cut to the desired length if the bottom has a fringe or ruffle the cut off from the top. With a hot glue gun, fabric glue or even Velcro, wrap the top round a cafe rod making sure the fold is straight. Make enough room to give it a gap. For windows that are covered in tile, you can use a small tension rod in place of the cafe rod.

Show Your True Colors

Tired of looking at the pea green fridge from the 1984? Paint it! There are several different companies that make “fusion” paint for appliances and home accessories. You can also shop around in used appliance stores for new hardware like door handles. You will need a backup option for storing your food while doing this project. For best results, thoroughly clean the outer surface of the entire refrigerator with dishwashing liquid and scrubby to cut the grease and get off ground in dirt. DO NOT DO THIS INSIDE THE HOUSE, over spraying and fumes can be messy and dangerous. Remove all the hardware, doors and tape off chrome with masking tape over lapping about one inch on the joints to prevent bleeding. Follow directions for spraying distance using one long even pass, two or three coats will ensure good coverage and eliminate any thin spots. Allow 4 to 6 hours drying time before replacing doors and hardware.

Bathroom Seaside

Create a beach cottage look in the bathroom with found shells; drift wood, washed up coral on a charger plate or a hurricane lantern. If you haven’t been to the beach lately most craft stores sell bags of cleaned seashells and other beach themed home accessories and decor. A color for the walls like light sea foam or pale sky blue will brighten up the area, color coordinate towels and wash cloths in white and sandy beige, add a print of the seaside. Kids can help too. Have your children, grandchildren, niece or nephew paint a picture of a fish, frame it and put it up for display.

Six Bathroom Accessories to Complete Your Bathroom

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

The bathroom is the private sanctuary of most homes. It is the place where we do our business and then walk away clean as a whistle. It is also the place that puts you in a most awkward position when you can’t find what you’re looking for – especially when you are not fully clothed!

This is why you need to make sure that your bathroom is outfitted with all the accessories it needs to be complete, which should include these basic components at the very least:

Bathroom Shelf

All those shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, razors and other random items you must have need a place to sit, which is why bathroom shelves are a must in any bathroom. These shelves need not be dull and lifeless, though. A simple glass shelf with metal supports will definitely add a touch of class to this most basic bathroom accessory.

Bathroom Towel Bar

The interesting thing about towel bars are absolutely essential in any bathroom. The last thing you want to happen while showering is to have to awkwardly step out of your bathroom to get a towel from the laundry bin. These bars will allow you to keep those towels neatly stacked and stocked in the bathroom at all times.

If you are taking a shower and want to get a solid grip on your towels, then towel rings will get the job done right. These convenient little rings, mounted on the wall or on intricately designed stands, will let you pull down hard without having to loosen your grip. This will be especially useful when your fingers are wet and slippery.

Murray Feiss Signature Series White Porcelain Soap Dish

If you use soap bars, then you definitely need to use soap dishes to prevent the bars from slipping and sliding all over the place. A soap dish mounted near your shower and your bath tub can make life a whole lot easier. You can just reach in and grab the soap bar while the dish catches all the muck and leftover suds. You can even go looking for the porcelain varieties for a classier touch to your bathroom.

If you prefer liquid soap, then installing the right soap dispensers will work well for you. And just like their soap dish counterparts, these also come in classier porcelain varieties to help style up your bathroom. This is definitely better than buying those generic plastic bottles that make your bathroom unfashionable.

IMAX Bayshore Wall Hooks

And last, but definitely not the least, your bathroom should have robe hooks. There are varieties that are wall-hung or free-standing, but the main point here is to provide an attractive and aesthetically-improving support structure for your clothes and robe. You can conveniently hang your robe on the hooks at your convenience and then pick it up just when you need it – which is after a bath or shower.

And there you have it, six bathroom accessories to complete your bathroom. Not only will they make the bathroom a much cleaner and more organized place, but they also make it a much more attractive space for you and your guests!
